Qik and CupCake Camp

Every now and again, its nice to be able to video and broadcast even when you were not planning on it. I was at cupcake camp and it was a madhouse. Lord of the flies in full effect when the cupcake come out. So I took a few shots, then though, this is a video moment. Now Cycorder will do a better job of recording, but in this case, broadcasting in real time is more fun, vs recording, going home and hoping I get around to moving the files off the iphone and then post them somewhere.

Just got a new mac and wanna jailbreak (pwn)? Perhaps not

There are a number of posts out there saying that jailbreak or pwn’ing does not work on the new macs. Well, its not the new Macs per say, but seems to be the new version of iTunes.

..from iPhoneOverdose

The problem is that the Mac does not recognize the iPhone when it restarts on how DOMs, the amendment needed to install the operating system’s iPhone.

Quake on the iPhone, on a NON JAILBREAK!

I never thought this would happen, but ZodTTD submitted his port of Quake to the Apple store yesterday. Now we still do not know if Apple is going to let this in or not (highly unlikely) but we will all be watching.  I have Quake on my jailbroken iphone and its pretty good. It takes a bit of time to get used to the controls, but given that we do not have physical buttons, its not bad. Glad the buttons are oversized. Definitely a flash back for us older FPS gamers.

MY TOP 5 JAILBRAKE (PWN) APPS FOR THE IPHONE

When I jailbreak my iphone, here are the first 5 apps I install straight off.

1) Unix tools (esp. SSH and Terminal) .  If you have to ask, you do not need it

2) Videorecoder – The only bummer is this app does not work on 2.1 right now. I use QIK for now. Its curious to me that apple has not put video in the phone. I still have the feeling they are going to partner with someone to release it thought the store for 9.99.   Even 1/2 a million downloads is $5m.  You KNOW they are not going to leave that kind of money on the table.

3) Categories – This is a new application that allows you to put icons into folders. The moment I saw this, I knew it would be a most have. My iphone is much cleaner now.

4) BossPrefs – This app also has minor issues in 2.1.  When you turn 3G on or off it will sometimes turn wifi off.  I’m sure they will fix this soon.

5) Customize – Although you can change almost anything about the graphics and sounds through this app, for me, I use it for one thing.  Change the alarm to something that will actually wake me up. )

Not all jailbreak apps may work on iphone 2.1

This is something to take into account when upgrading to 2.1  Some of my jailbroken apps do not seem to work correctly. Videorecorder3G does not load at all and IntelliScreen seems spotty at best.

I may have a conflict, (I have a feeling it could be Categories; although the jury is still out on that) but I really hope not, Categories became an instant MUST have as soon as I loaded it.

I will keep testing and keep you’all updated.

Jailbreak for iphone 2.1 already out! WOW!

I’m really getting sick of how the phone will sometimes lock the screen on me after a phone call, forcing me to reboot.  I’ve complained about this I do not know how many times.  Almost enough that this morning I thought, perhaps I will sacraficed my jailbreak apps just to fix it.  ANNNDDD.. They already have a jailbreak out!  Can you believe it?

IPHONE 2.1 OS UPDATE IS OUT – YOU WILL LOSE JAILBREAK (PWN)

Filed under: iphone — perivision @ 10:53 am

I’m not sure I want to update yet, one of the core complaints does not seem to be addessed (where the keypad does not hide and unhide correctly during a call). I’ll give it a few days and see what is said.  For those of us with jailbroken phones, we would have to lose our jailbroken apps and … not sure I’m ready to do that yet. )

Apps that made it worth jailbreaking (pwn)

There are a number of cool apps for a jailbroken phone that you cannot get via the app store, although most of them are not working on the 2.0.x phones yet…  waiting….

However, even just for these 3 apps/functions, its worth it.

1) Record video.  The quality is not that great, normally around 15 fps, but good enough to have video that is enjoyable.  Why Apple did not release this with the OS, I’m not sure, but I have a bet that they will partner up with a chosen company and put it on the app store.  Here are two reasons for this guess; First, there are levels of the OS you need to get to to record video well, second, EVERYONE will buy this app.  At 30%, Apple will make pretty good money on it.

2) SSH/Telnet/UNIX tools.  Really, if you have to ask, then you do not need this.

3) Changing of default sounds and graphics.  Although you can COMPLETELY change the look and feel of the iphone, the big value for me is changing the alarm sounds.  FULLY!  That weak sound is useless for a sleeper like me.  I need something with some punch! I use ‘FinalFantasy_Vicotry’! Wakes me up every time. 🙂

There is an app out there for live video broadcasting, Flixwagon, its fun but I do not have a use for it yet. Qik looks good too.

Now if you are into playing with redesigning the look and feel of your iphone, check out this site.  Here are a few samples.
