Video on the Palm Pre! Root = jailbreak

It always seem to be the way with smart phones isnt it? Just read in Gizmodo of a hack that will give you 320×480 resolution video at 30fps. Sweeet. And have a look at the video below. Nice. So what does this mean? Well, depending on the GPS abilities of the Pre we could (perhaps) see a few AR apps.

You need to root (jailbreak) your Palm Pre for this.

What could multi threading ‘run in background’ support in iphone 3.0 look like?

backgrounderI was writing a post on the best way to use Pandora on the iphone (link to article) and it struck me that THIS is how we may see ‘run in background’ support working on the iphone and why we want it.

First a few words on the Pro’s and Con’s of running an app in the background. Pro’s. As I first mentioned, playing music NOT from the ipod. That means Pandora, AOL radio, last.FM, Stitcher, etc… Quite often when I’m driving, which is when I listen to iphone digital radio the most, I need to look at the map on occasion to check traffic or for directions. Also if I get an email, I use intelliscreen to look at the email header.. ( I do not read or write emails when I drive and neither should you). Its quite annoying, and a distraction to reselect the radio app again. How about text chat? or at some point having a VoiP conversation and not dropping the call because you need to look something up? Keep your game going while taking a phone call.. There are plenty more examples, but you get the idea, being able to let one app continue to function as you invoke another app has many benefits..  {more here}

Qik and CupCake Camp

Every now and again, its nice to be able to video and broadcast even when you were not planning on it. I was at cupcake camp and it was a madhouse. Lord of the flies in full effect when the cupcake come out. So I took a few shots, then though, this is a video moment. Now Cycorder will do a better job of recording, but in this case, broadcasting in real time is more fun, vs recording, going home and hoping I get around to moving the files off the iphone and then post them somewhere.

How to upgrade from pwned iphone 2.1 to iphone 2.2 and then re jailbreak.

I know I said I was not going to bother upgrading to 2.2, but the geek blood that flows just cannot resist trying it out and seeing what will happen. That and I feel this certain journalistic responsibility to find out for my readers… (hope this feeling goes away soon )

So I thought I would record my steps as I prep my 2.1 pwned phone to 2.2, then re jailbreak it again. Again, I want to caution you, anytime you do anything outside of the normal, approved, dictated processes that have been outlined by Apple, you are taking chances, so if you are averse to risk, follow Nancy Reagan’s advice and ‘just say no’.  Right, so on with it..

Three user friendly solutions for accessing your iPhone like a USB drive

Since we carry our iPhones (and sometimes iPods) with us no matter where we go, why not carry a few documents as well?  I choose three application that are useful for using your iPhone as a remote storage device.   If there is one I missed that offers unique functionality, please let me know.

I think most of us are familiar with USB drives to move files around. Well, with iPhones having 8, 16 and 32 gigs of memory, there is plenty of space to put documents, like spreadsheets and powerpoint , images, music and so on on the phone such that we can have access to it at all times. If you are in sales, how cool would it be to have a collection of presentation documents available at anytime?

Review of iPhone movie apps and tips for getting the most when your shooting.

For those of you without jailbroken phones, just keeping moving along.. nothing to see here.. Ok, for the rest of you, there are 4 programs out there for taking video and for me, one that I cannot seem to get to work.

Cycoder: This is a pretty good app with a very simple UI. Start and stop. That’s it. The video is compiled on the fly and saved as a .mov file. If you used cycoder when it first came out, it did not have sound. Well, we have sound now.

I took the movie below using Cycoder, and given how much action there is in the scene, its not that bad.  Lets keep in mind this is a phone not spec’ed for taking movies after all. )

Tethering the iPhone to your laptop is suppose to be coming.

I just read this in cnet.

AT&T confirms tethering coming to iPhone in 2009

Eh. Perhaps. There is nothing to gain and a bit to lose for AT&T to do it now.  So I’m guessing they are keeping this in their pockets as a way to fight the sure to come competition from other service providers.

Just got a new mac and wanna jailbreak (pwn)? Perhaps not

There are a number of posts out there saying that jailbreak or pwn’ing does not work on the new macs. Well, its not the new Macs per say, but seems to be the new version of iTunes.

..from iPhoneOverdose

The problem is that the Mac does not recognize the iPhone when it restarts on how DOMs, the amendment needed to install the operating system’s iPhone.

Quake on the iPhone, on a NON JAILBREAK!

I never thought this would happen, but ZodTTD submitted his port of Quake to the Apple store yesterday. Now we still do not know if Apple is going to let this in or not (highly unlikely) but we will all be watching.  I have Quake on my jailbroken iphone and its pretty good. It takes a bit of time to get used to the controls, but given that we do not have physical buttons, its not bad. Glad the buttons are oversized. Definitely a flash back for us older FPS gamers.
