Social Media, the iPhone and the election

Well, another election has come and gone, but unlike other elections, this is the first election where social media had an impact on the outcome.

Obama used a grass roots based approach building and managing the organization. Just 4 years ago, it would be hard to imagine the level of organization and communication required to build and manage such numbers as those involved in the Obama campain through traditional top down means. But with youTube, Facebook, twitter and even the iPhone and Blackberrys; social media and the hand held tools that expand their reach has changed politics.

First, lets think about fund raising, something I’m sure everyone will agree was one of the major factors in this election’s outcome. What the Obama team did was focus on small donations via the internet. Although web based fund raising is not new, the way it was done was different.  In this campaign, we saw donate buttons on web pages and emails. Then, what I consider the first markable impact of social media, the ‘yes we can’ video.

How the iphone made me lazy

It used to be, before smartphones, that when I made an appointment to be somewhere, I would write it down on a calendar. Before I would leave, I would get a map and look up where I’m suppose to go, taking careful notes on how to get there. I would also write the phone number down just in case.
Once I connected my palmIII to the web via a cell phone, I started to become a bit less careful, knowing that if I did forget, the odds that the address or phone number I needed would be in my email somewhere. This became worse as I connected my treo to a Bluetooth GPS and thus had access to maps and voice directions.

Now enter the iPhone.

Sarah Palin vs. Obama from a cartoonist point of view

A friend of mine ask ‘why would McCain choose Palin?’  In my opinon, I think McCain was trying to find someone on the ticket to take on the ‘rock star’ effect that Obama has as well as someone who could excite the conservative base which John has not been able to do to date, both accomplished.  So with that in mind, have a look at this cartoon.  Sums it up perfectly in my mind, including the fact Obama earned his position (as did Lenny Kravits through good album after good album) through running a good campain where Palin was choosen.

Check out his comic.  Its pretty good.

Google Chrome bad for IE, no. Bad for Firefox. Perhaps.

I have been seeing a lot of press (mostly those not or on the edge of the computer industry) talking about how Google’s Chrome browser is going to try and take massive marketshare away from Internet Explorer. Ehh.  Doubt it.

Given that IE still has a current market share of over 75% and heck even IE6 still have 25%, why do you think Chrome is going to make any more inroads then Firefox or Opera has?  The fact is, they wont.

Chrome looks great and with the V8 JS engine its fast as all get out.  The speed at which it loads Yahoo mail is amazing to me. So far, I have not found any major issues short of one of my heavy Flash sites stalling out on me. Not to say there have not been problems. On occation, the browser will just hang for 5 -10 sec for no reason. Just when I’m ready to give it the 3 finger salute (ctrl-alt-del) it pops back.  Course, its buggy at that point so I just close and reopen and its right and rain.

Chrome will most likely get to the level of Opera IMHO. Perhaps 3% of the market, Maybe 5%, most of that coming out of Firefox’s cut.  Soon Firefox will release its V8.  Assuming FF does not become even more unstable, they should be able to hold most of their market share.

The telling sign will be IE8.  If IE8 can perform at the level of FF and Chrome, then I think the bleed-over will continue at the slow trickle it has been for the last year.

As for the user in me, I’m happy as all get out.  As a developer.. Eh..  Still have IE6 out there at 25%.  Sigh.. 😦

Google’s chrome is out. And its fast

Especially heavy ajax sites like google mail and yahoo mail.  These two site fly!!  which is great because I’m on web mail all the time.  I’ve also noticed that all JS calls execute much faster, including some timer processes. For example, if you have a timed dynamically resizing window, it will execute faster.

I also love how it imported EVERYTHING from firefox.  The only thing it did not get correct was the order of the bookmarks, but that was easy to fix.

I still have more sites to test, but so far, so good.

Here is the link.  Go get it!

Mix iphone dropped calls and radio call in shows … FAIL

A friend of mine was telling me about people calling into radio shows and having their iphone drop them in the middle of the call. Now, we know cell phones are not great, and I have heard shows where a cell call was lost, but given the expectation of a new phone to perform well, and the previous experience ATT cell users would expect based on older phones, every drop call from an iphone will just add to Apples and ATT’s headaches (mostly Apple).
